An alarming rise in calls for help has continued into 2021 since the early part of the COVID-19 lockdown last year as people were trapped at home with each other and struggling with job loss and other pandemic-related stress. The week following the March 19, 2020, statewide stay-at-home order, there was an unexpected lull in hotline calls. The Power of the Journey capital campaign received its first major donation not long after it was launched. From the administrative side, the new building had to be in a more easily accessible central location, provide enhanced security, enhanced training capacity, and space to expand existing programs. In 1991, a few local women formed the South Orange County Domestic Violence Action Committee with the dream of building a shelter for battered women in South County. After being contacted by Laura's mother and hearing that Laura had nowhere to turn to for resources to help her, the women were committed to making their dreams become a reality.
Our target population is families experiencing the effects of domestic violence in need of emergency shelter, support, education and counseling. Laura’s House operates on the philosophy that domestic violence is multi-dimensional and often cyclical in nature and must be addressed through a range of interventions. Our goal is to provide supportive service programs that will prepare our clients and their children to live independent and violence free lives, with an emphasis on education and prevention for future generations.
We offer various forms of education and see over 25,000 community members per year. A place to both donate and purchase high-quality used clothing, shoes, handbags, collectibles, antiques, paintings, furniture and other household items which proceeds from the store help fund our programs and services. Even though courts are closed, the legal advocacy component is available online, where clients can still attain restraining orders. Laura’s House also hopes to partner with other community organizations to provide the kind of training that is vital to a survivor’s independence, such as job search and interview preparation and basic finance. Other social services and law enforcement-related issues can also be addressed at the new site for Laura’s House, whose board of directors includes Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes.

While the mood at the new location is celebratory, the mission remains sobering. Laura’s House relocated in June to a building that, once fully developed, will offer four times as much space as the suite of offices occupied in Ladera Ranch the previous 11 years. Not only that, but Laura’s House owns the two-story structure and will save money with a mortgage that is about $7,000 less a month than the lease they once had.
