Another must-visit site in Charlotte Amalie is the St. Thomas Synagogue, the Western Hemisphere’s second-oldest synagogue.
Here’s more posts about our USVI Trip:
This Danish fort is one of the island’s most iconic historical landmarks. Not only is it the oldest standing structure on St. Thomas, but it also functions as a museum that showcases the unique history of the entire island. Roughly two miles from either cruise port, you can get there in less than ten minutes via taxi. For those looking to enjoy more of the island’s natural side, there is also the Skyride to Paradise Point, just a five-minute walk from the Havensight Pier. This gondola is one of the most popular attractions in the Caribbean, as it quickly takes passengers 700 feet above the port, enjoying stunning views and even a fully stocked bar! Although it’s not the island’s highest point, it is still a must-do, and it couldn’t be in a more convenient location.

Exciting shore excursions include zip-lining, beach days, and cultural tours. St. Thomas is an extremely popular port of call, especially for American cruise lines. Hence, there is a need for two cruise ports, even though the entire island is only 32 square miles.

Dining
Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the US Virgin Islands, is a popular destination for cruise passengers. Known for its historic architecture, duty-free shopping, and vibrant nightlife, the city offers plenty to explore. Selecting the right time for your cruise to the US Virgin Islands is crucial. The dry season, from December to April, features mild temperatures and low rainfall, ideal for beach and water activities. Budget-savvy travelers might prefer the shoulder season, May to November, for sunshine, warmth, and potentially better deals despite increased rainfall.

There are also plenty of restaurants within a short walk of the pier, including some port-of-call classics, like Senor Frogs and Hooters. You’ll also find some island exclusives, like Mojo’s, Barefoot Buddha, and the iconic Shipwreck Tavern. With the two welcoming over 1.5 million visitors annually, there has been a clear effort to make sure all visitors enjoy a comfortable experience. Both ports are all on ground level, so no need to worry about elevators or stairs. Wheelchair ramps also ensure curbs and other obstacles do not interfere with accessibility.
Keep in mind that some excursions may have age or physical restrictions, so double-check before booking. For a more independent experience, consider renting a car or taking a taxi to explore the islands at your own pace. The U.S. Virgin Islands are home to some of the best beaches in the Caribbean. St. John’s Trunk Bay is known for its clear turquoise waters, while St. Thomas’ Magens Bay is popular for its white-sand shores and lush greenery. For a more secluded experience, visit Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve on St. Croix, where you can find a number of small, sandy coves to relax in before heading back on board.

The rooftop lounge in the forward ship was dotted with shaded loungers and multiple hot tubs with a private bar, panoramic views, and nightly happy hour. We spent every afternoon lounging on the rooftop between excursions and watched the sunset during happy hour with an intimate group of cruisers we befriended. On our sea day, when the pool was most packed, the lounge remained an empty reprieve, and we certainly felt like RockStars with our whims catered to at every turn. One of the most visited attractions in the Virgin Islands, you can enjoy snorkeling and scuba diving lessons with dolphins, sea lions, sea turtles, stingrays, and other marine wildlife.
We weren’t the only ones who loved this spot; every passenger we spoke to said it was their favorite, and we failed to secure a second reservation due to its popularity. If you want to try some Caribbean food, Sugarcane Grill is an open-air restaurant that always serves island favorites. Amalia Café Restaurant is another open-air eatery with an amazing atmosphere and even better food.
Not only is it a relatively short drive, it’s a simple one, with the Waterfront Highway directly connecting the two. St. John is the least developed and most sparsely populated of the three main islands in the U.S. That's not surprising, since more than half its land is protected as a U.S. Most visitors reach St. John by ferry from St. Thomas, landing at the dock in Cruz Bay, St. John's main settlement. A village with only a few thousand residents, Cruz Bay has gained a reputation as an upscale retreat for movie stars and other high-profile people looking for a secluded getaway. The 99 Steps, a series of historic steps leading up to Blackbeard’s Castle, is one of Charlotte Amalie’s most popular attractions.
There were two hotels that we were considering in Charlotte Amalie. On our first planned trip to St Thomas, we were supposed to stay at the Galleon House, but Hurricane Irma came over and rained on our parade. So we hastily canceled that trip and booked Grand Cayman instead.
Unfortunately, neither of the two ports offers complimentary public Wi-Fi, but it’s not too difficult to find. Havensight Mall provides free Wi-Fi, and it is located just a five-minute walk from the Havensight Pier. If your cruise ship docks at Crown Bay Cruise Port, travel time and costs are almost identical, but you may want to give yourself more time to return to port, as fewer taxis travel to and from Crown Bay. Havensight Pier is the largest of the two ports, with three main berths along a single pier.
